The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception

In 1874 in Mexico City, the Reverend Father Refugio Morales, O.F.M., with the assistance of three young ladies founded a Congregation of Sisters under the title of Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.

After much religious persecution, the Franciscan Sisters sought shelter in an area where their community could grow.  They came to the United States in 1926 and established themselves in various charitable works.

Poverello of Assisi Kindergarten was established in 1964 with forty students.  Through the years, the school’s enrollment increased considerably serving all of the San Fernando Valley area.  At present, there are 235 students comprised of 3, 4 and 5 year olds in Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes.

The Sisters also teach in schools located in Orange County, San Fernando and Los Angeles.  They conduct Poverello of Assisi Retreat House in San Fernando, St. Francis Home for the Aged in Santa Ana, Immaculate Conception Home for Girls from broken homes in Los Angeles, two Missions in Arizona, one hospital in Tijuana, B.C. and another in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and Mother Gertrude Home for retired senior citizens.

At present the Congregation numbers approximately 1,100 members throughout Mexico, Central America and in the United States.
The discipline and learning experience provided our children at Poverello of Assisi Preschool assures them a successful academic career, and the joy and love of god shining in the faces of the dedicated Franciscan Sisters will be an inspiration to them forever.
